“In Turkey, a liter of unleaded fuel is at 2.20 €, while in Georgia it costs 1.10 €. And in our hotel in Batumi, the suite costs 130 lari, or about 65 euros only!!”
Kostas Mavrokefalos
“Batumi is a coastal city of great contrasts. Entering the town, you see only poverty which reflects in the very old buildings. Arriving at the beach on the other hand, you meet great opulence and construction boom, with the aesthetics sometimes flirting with kitsch.”

Our friends started the fourth day of the trip a bit... loudly and then took the road to
Georgia: “Our hotel room was beside the small coastal
airport of Trabzon. We decided to sleep a little bit longer and
so we did! Until at 12 in noon, when a plane landed and woke up us
suddenly. After a typical breakfast, we settled on our Ford Focus and with Tom at the wheel we took
the road to the Turkey - Georgia borders. The next 200 km is a
straight line with Black Sea to your left, which today seems to be
even darker because of the cloudy weather. The coastal towns are
not developed based on tourism and the absence of boats is
noticeable. The road network is modern though, with lots of
tunnels. Passing through one of them, we suddenly got at the
border. Watching right and left, we reached to a huge queue of cars
with drivers from Iran, Azerbaijan and of course Georgians
returning to their homeland. We waited there for four hours in an
impressive but also melancholic Black Sea coast. We did a number of
things to kill time, until drizzle started and we hided inside the
spacious Focus. Eventually, after 4 hours we passing borders and
stopped to change currency and refuel, paying the half for fuel of
what we used so far. In Turkey, a liter of unleaded fuel is at 4.46
Turkish lira (2.20 €), while in Georgia it costs 2.23 Lari (1.10
€). The weather is still cloudy/ rainy, as we reach at the beach of
Batumi, looking the new impressing buildings. Batumi
is a coastal city of great contrasts. Entering the town from the
border, you see only poverty which reflects in the very old
buildings. Arriving at the beach on the other hand, you meet great
opulence and construction boom, with the aesthetics sometimes
flirting with kitsch. After a little searching, we find a room at a
local hotel, where the suite costs 130 lari, or about 65 euros
only!! The receptionist is very eager to show us the city, a
proposal we don’t deny. After a while, we go out and soon we
discover all the new city of Batumi, which seems ready for big
challenges. In recent years, tourists from North but also from
Europe are coming here in the summer, flooding this city with the
impressive infrastructure. After a while, we meet George Katamadze,
former player of Dynamo Kiev and we go to eat Xinkali and Xachapuri (local food) in a traditional
restaurant. From one toast to another, as is custom of Georgians
(and Greeks of course!!), the hours passed and it's time
to retire to our beds. Sure is, Georgia is characterized by warm
hospitality. Tomorrow we are heading to Tbilisi.”
